Why File an Extension?

Avoid Filing Penalties

The late filing penalty is usually 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or part of a month, up to 25%. An extension avoids it if you file by the extended deadline. (Pay your estimated balance by April 15 to limit interest and the late payment penalty.)

More Time to Prepare

Form 4868 gives most individuals until October 15 to file (December 15 for Form 1040-NR filers without U.S. wages). Form 7004 gives most businesses six months; calendar-year partnerships and S-Corps get until September 15.

No Explanation Needed

You do not have to explain why you are asking for an extension. The IRS contacts you only if the request is denied.

Quick Answers

How does the $99 credit work?

When you hire us for tax preparation, the $99 you paid for the extension is deducted from your preparation fee. For example, if your tax prep is $525, you only pay $426.

Do I still have to pay taxes by April 15?

Yes, for most filers. An extension gives you more time to FILE, not more time to PAY. Estimate and pay what you owe by April 15 to limit interest and penalties. Nonresidents filing Form 1040-NR without U.S. wages have until June 15.

How long does it take?

Scope and timing are confirmed in writing before an engagement begins. Once we e-file your extension, the IRS generally sends its acceptance within 24-48 hours.

What if I have no idea how much I owe?

We can help you estimate it. If you overpay, you get a refund when you file your return.
